Flu and Cold

Influenza or the common cold are widespread conditions that cause symptoms such as a sore throat, runny nose, coughing sneezing, fever and more. These illnesses affect millions of people each year, most often between the month of September and March. Infants, children, older adults and those with a weakened immune system are at an increased risk of developing these conditions.

More serious upper respiratory infections may include bronchitis and pneumonia. Bronchitis often develops after a cold and may produce a fever, chest congestion or wheezing. It can also develop from cigarette smoke or other pollutants, and may be a chronic condition. Pneumonia is caused by a virus, bacteria or fungus and can range from mild to very severe causes, causing symptoms such as a high fever, chills, chest pain and cough with mucus.

These infections usually last for a few days or weeks and have no real cure, although there are plenty of home and over-the-counter treatment options available to relieve symptoms. Patients can often reduce their risk of getting or passing on a cold or flu by washing hands regularly and staying away from people who are sick. It is important for patients to get plenty of rest while sick and be sure to keep drinking liquids.

Urinary Tract Infections

A urinary tract infection is a common infection of the urinary system, which includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. Infections occur more often in women than in men and can cause intense pain, burning with urination, blood in the urine, back pain and fever.

It is important for patients to seek proper treatment for this condition, as an untreated infection can cause permanent damage to the kidneys. Urinary tract infections are usually treated with antibiotics.

Kidney stones may develop as a result of an imbalance in the composition of urine, causing crystallized stones to form that can be extremely painful. No treatment is usually needed for this condition, as the stone will pass on its own after patients drink plenty of water.

Ear, Nose and Throat Infections

Infections of the ear, nose and throat are common conditions that may develop as a result of a virus, fungus or bacteria. These infections may cause facial pressure and pain, fever, irritability, headache, dizziness and other troubling symptoms. Some of the most common types of ENT infections include ear infections, strep throat, sinus infections and more.

Many of these conditions, especially ear infections (otitis media), occur most often in children as a result of excess fluid in the ear or a bacterial infection. Treatment varies depending on the type and cause of the infection, but may include antibiotics, decongestants, antihistamines or nasal sprays. Your doctor will determine the best treatment for your individual condition.

Ophthalmic Infections

Eye infections develop as a result of bacterial, fungal or viral substances that enter the eye and cause symptoms such as redness, pain, discharge and dry eyes. It is important to determine the cause of the infection in order to prescribe the best treatment approach.

Conjunctivitis, commonly known as pink eye, is an infection and inflammation of the conjunctiva, the membrane that lines the eyelid and eyeball. This common condition is caused by a viral or bacterial infection and gives the eye a pink or red appearance. Treatment for pink eye depends on the cause of the condition, but may include antibiotics or over-the-counter drugs.
